The report
"Home-based care offers the very essence of what we are trying to achieve. We are able to offer services and products which are new and innovative to our primary care trusts and our customers, at a reduced cost."

We wanted to understand whether health and social care organisations could save money whilst improving patient outcomes and experiences by providing certain services out of hospital. We explored four services where home-based healthcare models already exist as an alternative to hospital care and then extrapolated the assumptions and data to a national level. We found there are significant cost savings to be made in each of the four areas:
- Between £180m and £210m for long-term and other selected ACS conditions
- Between £217m and £837m for enhanced supported discharge
- Between £46m and £73m for specialised services (chemotherapy)
- Approximately £160m for end of life care
- Between £540m and £1.2bn for the four services combined
The costs of providing home-based healthcare to these populations were estimated, based on existing service models and assumptions taken from NHS Birmingham East and North.
